IN UDON THANI (UDORN), THAILAND

We stopped here for two nights. It was about a five hour bus ride from Nakhon Phanom, and a world apart. This is a big, bustling city.

Jim was disappointed because this was where he could get a good deal on football (soccer) jerseys. There was a shop near the shopping mall that printed shirts, and always had a lot of odd jerseys. After we dropped our bags at the hotel, we headed to the shop. The ownership and inventory had changed. The shop still sold some jerseys but not the wonderful eclectic selection they had in previous years. The look of the shop also changed, it was much neater looking, and it looked like it was now run by women rather than the guys before. Instead of buying a jersey, we went to the movie. We saw American Sniper, which is a good old fashion western movie set in Afghanistan during the Afghan war. The hero meets girl, woos and finally wins girl. There is also the duel between the hero and the villain, except instead of .45s, its long-range sniper rifles.

In Udon we saw this overloaded truck ready to leave for Lao.
This area is known for this style of pottery.
An interesting tuk-tuk in mostly Buddhist Udon.

And, a typical Thai street corner with waiting tuk-tuks and the convulated overhead wiring that seems to bean integral part of Thailand.

At our hotel, City Inn, the owner is a lady who lived in Vancouver for many years. On the morning we left Laura once again had her Vietnamese omelet and Jim had his Vietnamese sandwich followed by Vietnamese coffee.

At the bus station there was a group of monks waiting for our bus also.
